So Mrs Actual Cool Kent had a Birthday celebration last week, and as she didn’t fancy doing a bungee jump from Niagara Falls, we decided on the next best treat, a trip to our favourite pub, the Bell Inn, In Bearsted.
We had heard through the grapevine that they had a new beer garden created in the winter, and a new chef too, so we were pretty excited to get down there and check it all out. Unfortunately since creating the beautiful and stylish beer garden, Nigel the landlord had forgotten to arrange the weather to match the cool addition, so we will review the outside experience when he arranges some warmer weather
As usual we plodded down on a Friday because we love the vibe there, classic hits pumped out via tribute bands creating a great atmosphere and pulling in a lovely crowd
This weeks entertainment was provided by the Konks. Yes you guessed it, a Kinks tribute band. ( Tribute bands are legally required to create the corniest pun for their band, it’s the law. Cant wait for bands such as ‘Two Directions’ and ‘Warmplay’ cropping up there in years to come.)
The service as always was impeccable and the addition of the new chef meant we ended up all ordering from the specials board. ( which could actually be a tribute band name I guess)In the absence of Calamari from the menu, a cardinal sin which on another day could result in a dreadful review and a letter to Teresa May, I went for a Brie and Cranberry combo.
Nigel was a wonderful host and on hearing that it was Helen’s 23rd Birthday, provided a free bottle of fizz which went down a treat. The mains were great, I went for the smoked haddock Risotto and Helen once again trumped me with stuffed chicken breast on tagliatelle
We had the pleasure of the student with us, and she went for the 8oz steak which being a student, she devoured in one go, they are basically feral and have to eat quickly before the rest of the pack eats the food before them.
So the deserts are if anything the highlight of the menu, they are always amazing and always like most the menu, locally sourced. In fact I am going to contradict myself. The Best thing about the Bell Inn, is the whole package! There are better restaurants, there are many good pubs in Kent, giving great service. There are cooler locations. But nowhere really combines all these with such value for money, and friendly service with such an excellent vibe. Well done Nigel and his team once again, for a cool, swinging, great value gastro pub. We cannot recommend the Bell Inn highly enough if you want a fun night out on a Friday night.
This Bank Holiday there is the promise of an amazing Soul Weekender, so maybe we will get to use this brilliant new beer garden too! ( time to get my James Brown outfit out.)
